| Book Excerpt that I LOVE: “I wish this winter could never end but spring is coming.” “And then we’ll say goodbye to peace and quiet. Rarunga will wake, and it will be do or die.” Tanda gazed at her. “You’re right. From now on, we’ll be fighting for our very lives.” Then he added, “If we survive, why don’t we stay together, the three of us, just like this winter?” Balsa’s eyes wavered. Tanda said quietly, “I’ve been waiting all this time. You know that. I thought I would wait until you fulfilled your vow.” His eyes suddenly filled with something that could have been either sorrow or anger. “But I’ve begun to think maybe you’ll never come back, no matter how long I wait. Your life has become one long, bloody battle. Somewhere along the line you started to fight just for the sake of fighting.” Balsa did not answer, but in her heart she knew that he was right. The fighting impulse had penetrated the very marrow of her bones. During the winter, there had been times when she had been burning for a fight. She smiled wryly. “What should I do? Do you have any medicine that can cure me?” Tanda smiled bleakly and shook his head. “If you can’t believe I could be that medicine, then there’s no point in waiting, is there?” Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit Warroor, Book 1 |
| What I Like: As you all know, art is taste. And manga appeals to me more, not because I lick Japan's butthole, but because I thoroughly enjoy the graphic design-oriented, complex paneling that is employed in a cinematic fashion. It tickles my fancy. Some people think realism = complex, but any designer will probably argue with you on that aspect until he or she is blue in the face. Design is shape, text, layout -- all of these things. I like it. The stories and characters are people that I can relate to, and they change over time and go on journeys of both external and internal development. People ask me if I like American comics, and my answer is, "Generally speaking, I don't enjoy the mainstream ones I have tried. Not because of art, but because the stories don't appeal to me." I think many people discount the art of cartooning. It seems like if you're confident, you can enjoy cartoons at any age. But if you're insecure, you'll spend all your time trying to prove how adult you are. In other words, where's your sense of fun? THAT said, here are some COMICS that I like: Mickey Mouse by Floyd Gottfredson BONE by Jeff Smith Peanuts by Charles Schultz Blankets by Craig Thompson ![]() |
